At the end of my paper "The Centrality of Mathematics in
Western Thought" (Math. Mag. 1988, 220-230) I have a little
section called "Opposition." There are quotations from
Aristotle, Newton, Malthus, Pascal, Cauchy, Weizenbaum,
Wordsworth, Whitman, and Dickens, and references to Goethe and
Evgeny Zamyatin's novel "We."
