Do you know the textbook by Victor Katz on the history of mathematics? He
has illustrated his book with reproductions of mathematicians on postage
stamps. His second edition should be out by now.
Secondly, there was a French stamp in 1937 to commemorate the 300th
anniversary of the DISCOURS of Descartes. On the stamp they had his title
read:
DISCOURS SUR LA ME'THODE.
The trouble was that the actual title does not have the word *sur*. It is
DISCOURS DE LA ME'THODE,
or in full
DISCOURS
DE LA ME'THODE
POUR BIEN CONDUIRE SA RAISON ET CHERCHER
LA VE'RITE' DANS LES SCIENCES
They discovered their error and issued the stamp with *sur* replaced by *de*,
but, my question is, can one find stamps that contain the error? Do you
own even the corrected one?
Best wishes,
Sam Kutler
