A. Loewy, Jahresber. DMV 26 (1918), p. 108, footnote:
"Petersens Beweis ist eine Verschaerfung des Wantzelschen,
der nicht ausreicht, und zwar auf gleicher Grundlage."
He is explicitly referring to Wantzel's claim that a
certain equation has 2-power degree. Thus the gap *has*
been noticed.
