By the way ... and I understand it may not be much help as it is in Italian,
but
Giovanni Crapulli: Mathesis universalis: Genesi di un'idea nel XVI secolo
(Roma: Edizioni dell'Ateneo, 1969 285 p) would be a very useful additional
source. The book is extremely hard to find (even in Italy) and it is a bit
of a curate's egg ... but there are parts of it that are a goldmine. Sadly,
it is a work that seems to be little known.
