Come to think of it, another good source on the Cartesian idea of m.u. is in
Sasaki: Descartes' Mathematical Thought,
and
S. Gaukroger's Descartes, an Intellectual Biography pp.100-103
has a very cogent discussion of Cartesian m.u. and its origins (possibly
Aristotle, Proculus, or Romanus).
I don't have it to hand, but I'll wager that Bill Shea's bio of Descartes,
W. Shea: The Magic of Numbers and Motion
will also have a discussion (no doubt based on Sasaki and Crapulli).
