Dear Colleagues
Concerning Dedekind, you may also enjoy an article by Jose Ferreiros:
Traditional Logic and the Early History of Sets, 1854-1908, Archive for History of Exact Sciences, 1996, 50.1, 5-72, where he argues that there are three things going on that are sometimes confused:
sets as foundational objects (Dedekind country);
sets as topological objects (many people, e.g.Poincare);
and sets as infinite objects of various sizes (Cantor country).
He argues that Riemann was a significant influence and also that Dedekind should be considered as a logicist.
Best wishes
Jeremy Gray
