You can find information on how the Greeks managed practical calculations,
with or without abacus or counters, in Sir Thomas L. Heath's classic, "A
History of Greek Mathematics", Vol. I, Dover, 1981, pp. 46-64. It is an
oldish reference, but it may be useful.
