Gail Young, President of the MAA from 1969-1970, died on
August 29, 1999. Young, a topologist, received his Ph.D. at the
University of Texas in 1942 under the direction of R.L. Moore.
In addition to his research in topology, he also was deeply involved in
mathematics education at all levels. He worked with the School
Mathematics Study Group (SMSG) of "New Math" fame and with the

extensive list of contributions to mathematics and mathematics education
led to his receiving the MAA's Award for Distinguished Service in 1987.
