AMATYC Outer Banks Summer Institute
“Teaching in Context”
Duck, North Carolina
June 11 - June 16, 2000

Teaching in Context
At the AMATYC Outer Banks Summer Institute, instructors will model
real-world situations that can be used to teach mathematical ideas and
enhance student understanding in courses from beginning algebra to
pre-calculus. Ideas on how to connect the situation to the mathematics to
be taught will be shared and discussed by the instructors. Participants
will be provided several field experiences from which they can develop
their own teaching materials to enhance student understanding of mathematics.

Data relationships many times provide situations in which mathematics can
be developed; thus the use of the Texas Instrument CBR, CBL, and related
calculators will be integrated in the institute. The course is a
cooperative effort between the Ohio State University College Short Course
(CSC) Program and the AMATYC Summer Institute Program.

Instructors:
Debbie Crocker, Appalachian State University and Ed Laughbaum, The Ohio
State University. Local resource people will include speakers from the
Wright Brothers Museum and the Jockey’s Ridge National Park. The Army Field
Research Facility (FRF) will house the institute and also provide resource
personnel.

Location:
The Institute will be held on the Outer Banks of North Carolina near the
village of Duck. Duck is just north of Kitty Hawk.

Lodging:
Rental homes will be available for participants. If attending as an
individual, you will share a home with other participants of the same
sex one person to a bedroom. You may also select to share a room.
Vacationing families can rent an entire house or share with another family.
Homes rent from Sunday to Sunday and participants may stay the full rental
time. An economy hotel and a resort hotel are located near by. Details will
be sent upon request.

Transportation:
If arriving by plane, use the Norfolk International Airport. Ground
transportation will be available for the 1½ hour car ride to the Duck/Kitty
Hawk area. Information will be sent after you register for the institute.
If arriving by car, maps to the Outer Banks will be sent on registration.

Social Events:
Various evening events will be planned. Such as a boat cruise on the
Albemarle Sound, a group dinner, or a night at the outdoor drama “The Lost
Colony.”
