[MATHEDCC] "Potato salad problem"

The Potato salad problem was discussed on "Car Talk" last fall. At that time it
was just a bag of potatoes sitting on the back porch. If you are looking for m
ath problems the "Car Talk" show on your local NPR station is a great resource.
Secondly: You have been discussing low success rates lately. We have open enro
llment and our Study Skills department have found that 84% of the students that
are assesses below the 7th grade reading level have left our college by the th
ird semester. Since our lowest level math textbook is written on a 10th grade r
eading level I am not surprised that we are not more successful. However, I do
not see this as an excuse but as a challenge, and this is a wonderful forum for
sharing ideas, so between all of us we should be able to improve the situation
. So, keep up the good work!!
