Bob, We've been working with the COMPASS test for a couple of years. We looked
at both it and the CPT and the math dept. preferred the CPT. We felt it was
more in line with expectations in our courses, etc. However, for other politica
l reasons the college went with COMPASS. We have found it difficult to work
with because there is so much critical thinking required even at the lowest
level. While I wish our students were ready for this most of them are not. Ther
efore almost everyone places in Arithmetic or Elementary Algebra. While this
may be realistic, its not feasible to carry out. We have played with the cut
scores a lot and still are but we're still not pleased with its ability to dis
tinguish between Elem and Inter Algebra. I'm curious as to why you are changing
and what other people's experience has been.
