In hiring adjuncts, we look for glowing references from previous teaching
positions in high school. On rare occasions we have hired adjuncts
sight-unseen and found them not to be effective.
It seems bad practice to give a person a "try-out" in "night school" or
"Continuing Ed" if there are reasonable alternatives. And be very
conscious of the fact that someone can put on a "show" for an hour, or
even one class for a semester, but you need someone who can go the
distance.
When our department assisted in hiring a full-time computer science
instructor, we asked the final selection of applicants to do a
presentation to the search committee. The successful candidate was the
one who did the best presentation.
