We also require a short teaching segment in the interview. It is extremely
helpful. We do not give them a topic; we let them pick there on - which
also gives us a little insight. (Is the topic appropriate for a CC? You'd
be surprised ath what some of them choose.)
Worst situation: A candidate came highly recommended by references and his
transcript loked good. He was just completing his Masters. He had no
formal teaching experience, but had been a "study group leader." And his
professors assured us he could teach. About 10 minutes into his lecture, he
was visibly nervous and openly sweating. We were feeling sorry for him and
trying to make him feel comfortable (not asking "trick questions" or trying
to see how well he could think on his feet by giving wrong answers to his
questions, etc.) He stopped the lecture and said, "This is hard. How long
do you have to teach before you get used to it. I don't see how you guys do
it."

"It matters not the subject taught, nor all the books on all the shelves.
What matters more, yes most of all, is what the teachers are themselves."
