I have heard noone mention what I think is a _most_ important aspect of
student retention - study skills. I just returned from the
Houghton-Mifflin Developmental Mathematics Workshop in New Orleans at
which one of the speakers was Dr. Paul Nolting, author of _Winning at
Math_. The statistics from his research indicate that students who learn
how to study math have much more success in math courses at all levels.
For further information, contact Dr. Nolting at pnolting@aol.com.

For other evidence in support of this, check out the following paper:

Maybe we need to be offering a short course on how to study math along
with our regular math courses.
