We considered a rental program but could not get anyone (the bookstore,
library, or math lab) to sponsor it. We investigated rentals when we
began "requiring" graphing calculators in Precalculus and Calculus
classes.

We subsequently purchased (using grant money) two classroom sets -- first
TI-82s then TI-83s. These are "loaned" as needed for individual class
sessions and returned to the closet at the end of class. We also have a
set of inexpensive four-function calculators purchased by one of the
instructors for use in developmental classes.

Most of our students in Precalculus and Calculus purchased graphing
calculators without complaint when I began using them in the first days
of class. Even our economically disadvantaged students [and we have
many] seem to have their own. I use the "loaners" only rarely -- for
exams or an especially calculator-intensive class.
