I may be alone on this subject, but I do not like the idea of having an
attendence policy. Our students are adults. They should be treated as
such. This does not mean that I beleive in a hands off policy of
attendance, only that students should not be automatically withdrawn from
a course for abscences/tardies. I do beleive in taking a very proactive
roll in confronting the student on their imminent failure. "you have
missed 4 classes and 3 quizzes, failed all of the tests..." Most
importantly though, I am sure to ask the student what they are going to
do to improve their performance. If they are not willing to change,
then their failure rests upon their shoulders. If they want to change,
I do everything in my power to assure that it happens.

In many instances studetns do not know what they are doing
ineffectively. So, I make an effort to sit down with the student and
figure out how they learn (or don't as it may be) and find a path for
them to follow to success. It is often difficult to find the time to
do this, but I think it is worth it.

Every student deserves a chance to fail.
