My attendance policies (in response to the sub-thread on the retention
thread) is noted in my grading policy posted in my syllabus.

Grades will be based on the following: Exams - 80%
Final - 20%

During the first day of class I ask my students how much of your grade is
based on: Attendance, book reports, bulletin boards, emptying trash can,
clapping erasers, etc. I then show them the paragraph that says
"Attendance is expected. Students who are absent are expected to obtain the
notes and do the homework before the next class meets." I then tell them
that it has been statistically proven that if they are not in class it is
very difficult for me to teach them.

But it doesn't help, much. Every semester about this time - two weeks
before the end of the term - a few students come up to me and say. "I'm
failing, what can I do to raise my grade?" (Some even ask if they can write
a book report or do a bulletin board.) I am convinced that, for some
students, going through a class of failure is a necessary step on the road
to success.

This Saturday I am leading a workshop entitled "Making the Transition form
High School to college." (Audience is HS Seniors) Among the things I am
going to say is: Life is a series of decisions based on priorities which
result in consequences.

P.S. How many of our educational bereaucrats were taught the William
Glasser philosophy espoused in "Schools without Failure"?

What matters more, yes most of all, is what the teachers are themselves."
