On the first day of class (Statistics) I break class up into diads and
give them five minutes to talk to their partner. Then they introduce each
other and tell something interesting about their partner. Next we go
throiug some data gathering exercises and then I pass out an
intentionally tricky T/F set of questions on the Course Policy. For all
the false questions they must give page and paragraph why statement is
false. I find that this set of T/F's really makes them read carefully the
C.P. I should mention that I have given out the C.P. at the beginning of
class. The next day we correct the set and I answer any questions AND
their grade is recorded.

Besides the careful reading of the C.P., I gain time for class
introduction of Statistics. This next semester I am going to use Against
All Odds #1 in addition to the above.

This process has worked well for me.
