Let's not throw out the baby with the bath water. If there are going to be
resource rooms, math labs, remedial after school programs (hs level) why
shouldn't the other end of the spectrum get the most that they can? Both
groups of students will have accomplishments,be productive and creative as
adults The first group may , have wonderful people skills, do great in the
business world etc. but I think that most abstract thinking will not be
coming from these students.. We all know that Bill Gates quit Harvard,
Einstein was considered not too smart, Nelson Rockefeller was dyslexic and
I'm sure others are in this category. But let's be realistic. They are not the
majority. We must have the honors programs--what we can't have are children
being placed in them on demand by parents or other political reasons.
My senior math class when I was in hs was solid geometry and trig and I first
had calculus in college. Thank goodness I can pick up a 7th grade text and
see 3-dimensional figures. My sophomores and seniors have seen the 4th
dimensional cube. Some changes are wonderful. We just have to be selective.
