[MATHEDCC] pesky error messages

Hi folks,

I have had a couple of distress messages from you regarding the sudden flood
of error messages received over the last couple of days. Be it known that I
get many such messages on a daily basis - such is the joy of being a list
owner. Normally error messages such as this are sent only to list owners so
that Wayne and I, your two friendly owners of mathedcc, receive and deal
with this stuff. Somehow the system generating these messages (SPJC - St.
Petersburg Junior College) has addressed them to the LIST instead of the
LIST OWNER. So you get a glimpse of what we deal with on a regular basis.
Please don't bail out because of an occasional gitch of this nature. Be
assured that we (the list owners and the system administrators at the
mathematics archives) try to resolve these problems as soon as possible
after they occur! Generating an extra flood of complaints only adds to the
confusion.

Another point: of course the list owners do not send advertising messages
to the list! we do what we can to prevent them. In spite of the safeguards
that are in place to prevent commercialism from creeping into the list, it
is inevitable that some such messages will get through. Simply deleting
them instead of being goaded into a state of righteous indignation and
causing further disruption in the smooth functioning of the list by sending
messages which state the obvious would be a far more efficient way of
dealing with the problem.

Point made!

Brian
