"All of the workshops I attended stimulated good discussion and
sharing of ideas. In my mind the stimulation and exploration made
the workshops very worthwhile."
"I appreciated (think valuable) the copy of the AMATYC
Standards - even though I already have a copy. It gave me a
chance/opportunity to read them - think about them - discuss
them - in the context of my peers."
"In my opinion the conference was a huge success - Iooking
forward to next year."
The workshop entitled Group Projects - How to Integrate Writing,
Technology, and Modeling in Precalculus Mathematics was ". . .
not just projects, it included test grading ideas too, and how to
write and what to watch for."
"Workshop B (Group Projects - How to Integrate Writing,
Technology, and Modeling in Precalculus Mathematics) was
amazing - beautifully organized."
"Everything was great, but a number of sessions should be
repeated. Hard to make the decision as to what session to
attend."
"I like the blending of the AMATYC Workshop and the
ORMATYC Conference because there is a lot of quality
workshops and sessions to choose from. Let us keep this up."
"I really liked the U of W professor's Saturday lunch
presentation."
"The opportunity to share information across colleges is
invaluable. This is so important to all of us."
"Probably the two best speakers (Friday and Saturday lunches)
that I've heard at conferences!"
"There is such variation within the state in the present degree of
integration of technology into our classes, and the number and
type of problem solving activities, group activities, and modeling
activities in our classes. Someone from a school that already does
a lot of one or more of these topics may not do more of them as a
result of this conference. So I suggest caution in interpreting the
results of these questions. While it's true that almost all of us
could do more of at least one of the "topics,"
many of us are interested in making "optimum" use of the topic,
more than in making the "maximum" use of the "topic." In our
situation, optimum and maximum may not be the same."
"All the ORMATYC conferences I've attended (and that's almost
all of them) have been useful. However, I think the last 2 have
been the best. And I attribute this to 2 main reasons. First is the
maturation of ORMATYC that has been occurring, but mostly I
attribute the high quality and usefulness of the last 2 (counting
this conference) to being larger because it was combined with
another conference. Hence, I suggest trying to arrange another
combined conference with WAMATYC and AKMATYC (i.e.
another AMATYC regional conference)."
"Bill Thomas was very good!!"
"The chance to talk with each other is the most wonderful aspect
of these conferences. Workshops that allow time for that are
great - new info and exchange with colleagues."
"This was a great conference! It was well-planned and executed."
"Discussion Groups are exceedingly valuable and perhaps could
be scheduled for 1 # hours. It would be helpful to set a time for
schools to gather together their faculty at the conference and do
some planning. During these times, people from very small
institutions could meet as a group to discuss what and how to do
at a small school."
Workshops/sessions " . . . should promote more discussion of the
philosophy of activities, suggestions and difficulties experienced
by the instructor. Less of teaching us like students. Thank you
all - very enjoyable."
"Enjoyed the conference - practical, entertaining, nice location,
high quality of presentations."
Here are some of the comments that people made during the
closing session. Due to travel constraints, no one from outside of
Oregon reported at the Sunday session. The comments from our
group of Oregon community colleges reflects the fact that the
majority of the colleges have been embracing the Standards for
several years. I believe that Lynn Trimpe's first comment
summarizes the feelings of many of the conference participants.
Closing Session:
PCC -Ilga Ross
The talk on geometry let her see that (and how) PCC should use
TI-92s in Math for Elementary Ed.
PCC has already been working in teams on implementing their
Title III Grant. After attending the team building workshop she
has decided that they should be reforming their working teams.
CCC -Jack Scrivener
CCC already assigns student projects, but from the workshop, he
saw now that student projects and groups need to be more tightly
structured.
Chemeketa CC -Dave Gillette
We have a 5 year Title III Grant for preprogram courses for
students who are underprepared. They have used and will
continue to expand collaborative learning.
NOTE: Marveen McCready from Chemeketa CC gave a
presentation on the results of her sabbatical leave where she
showed the matrices she has made to match the course outlines of
each of their courses with the Standards.
Mt. Hood CC -Gary Grimes
Mt. Hood CC has had a committment to math ed reform early.
They have had near unanimous support, so everyone is already
into reform.
Clatsop CC -Doug Nelson
The small class sizes at Clatsop makes working in groups and with
technology easier than it is at other schools. They have a
calculator loan program developed to help students who cannot
afford the technology.
LBCC -Lynn Trimpe
The workshops and conference reassured me that we have been
moving in the right direction over the last 5 years, i.e. use of
groups, using technology early, using modelling, and integrating
courses.
more activities and elaborating upon the ones that we have.
at our own school for our own teachers. We may try a
miniconference or retreat at our own school.
Rogue CC -Dorette Long
The presenters of the workshops have done all the research and
now I can take it back to my school to use it.
She plans on doing joint projects with other disciplines, and is
going to encourage students to go to their instructors in other
disciplines to see where mathematics is used in their discipline.
