This is in response to the discussion of using graphing calculators in Interme
mediate Algebra, particularly to Nancy. Nancy, are any of your students at this
level possibly going on to calculus or beyond? Some of ours do and there is
definitely still a need for paper and pencil skills even with simultaneous
equations. THe place to deal with that begins at the Elementary and Intermedia
te levels. Students who don't have those skills are going to hurt up the line.
If you can guarantee they're not going much further in math, scienc or business
then that might be ok. By the way,its good to talk to you!

diate Alg, particlularly to Nancy Sattler. Nancy, do any of your students from
Intermediate Algebra go on to calculus or anything beyond? If they do, they sti
ll need to do some things by hand-even simultaneous equations. While the tech
nology does a lot of things and does make some problems more accessible, there
are still paper and pencil needs that must be addressed and this is the level
for addressing them. Some of our students start at this level and end up being
math or science majors. They can't afford to do problems only with technolgy.
I believe that will be true for awhile.
By the way, its nice to talk with you!
