How about using the graphing calculators to show the parent graph of linear,
quadratic, cubic etc. and then how the translations change the location?
Once the student does a few by hand, he can make predictions about how the
graph should look and quickly verify his predictions. It is instant feedback
and seeing immediately what was done right or wrong.
