Some of our students do go onto calculus. We are graduating our first
mathematics major this June. I believe that the student need to understand
how to do the problems with paper and pencil first. When I teach
simultaneous equations for the first time, the students do the work
"manually". They do several homework problems "manually". Like any other
concept in mathematics, the students need to understand what is happening.
Once the student's demonstrate the skill of solving the equations, they are
shown how to use the calculator to find the answer. This becomes a real
time saver when they are working applied problems. So, once the
understanding is there, the student can use the calculator to quickly find
the answer.
