Nancy, are you assuming that students can't (or don't) understand
mathematics by using a technology-based method first? There is a wonderful
teaching exercise with technology that leads students to understand what it
means to solve a system and what the solution means.
I have found just the opposite idea works exceptionally well for
developmental students. I always start every topic with technology then
proceed to traditional mathematics. However, I don't think this can happen
in a traditional curriculum.
