CORD (Center for Occupational Research and Development, a non-profit org in
Waco, Texas) is beginning a curriculum and professional development project
for middle/secondary school mathematics especially targeting the lower 25%
of mathematics students--those typically recognized as "at-risk" of
dropping out of school. It will be funded by foundation grants and a
consortium of state education agencies.
To that end, we are seeking 4 to 6 authors who can contribute meaningful
portions of the student and teacher material during the course of the
1998-1999 development period. The course topics will cover Pre-Algebra and
Algebra I concepts (secondary level) over a span of two classroom years in
a very contextual and real-world-of-work manner with frequent hands-on
measurement activities. While we don't expect to be able to address all
the higher-order, critical-thinking sort of gems we all love to teach, if
we can actively save even half of these lower-25% students from dropping
out or failing the math portion of mandatory state exams, we will have
accomplished a big feat, right? At the very least, these students will be
much better equipped for the workplace. We're told that right now teachers
have precious little tools to address this problem.
If I've piqued your interest and you have some writing talents to offer to
earn some money in your spare time, please give me a call or personal
e-mail reply (off the list) and we can discuss this project further. I'll
be glad to send you a project prospectus. See the footer of my e-mail for
my contact info.
Thanks for your time and the opportunity to ask for help.
