There's a website offering free software called DOME which
does either a section or a whole geodesic sphere of whatever
frequency (in this case 9). One of the options is to output
your section in what's called POV format, suitable for feeding
to a free ray tracing engine called Povray.
This is something kids (as well as teachers) can do as DOME
requires only some command line parameters and Povray eats the
script you give it. With a little search and replace in a text
editor, you can play with color and other aspects of the rendering
(give a different background, change camera angle...).
