"Which is the better buy, a 10" pizza selling for $4.00 .....or a
............................15" pizza selling for $7.00?"
I asked the class to explain the reasoning for their answers.
Here are 5 unedited answers from different students.
(1.) "I would get a 15" pizza because there are probably fewer
people and you just want your pizza now."
(2.) "Buying 1 big pizza would be a better deal because you'll be getting
a bigger pizza for less. But getting 2 small pizzas
would be better yet because you'll get 5 more inches for just a dollar
more."
(3.) "I think the $7 pizza is better because if you could only
buy 1, then you get more for your $."
(4.) "15" is a better deal for a small group of people. If you a larger
group, it would be better if you got a 10" because
you get more for less money."
(5.) "The 4$ one would be better because if you buy two (2), it
would be 8$ which is one dollar more than the 15 inch, but
you get 20 inches to your buying 20 inches of pizza for a dollar more
than the 15 inch."
It seems to me that the students are focusing their attention
on the change in the radius and not considering the area. I wonder why?
