I brought the student's e-mail with me to my office the next day. I planned
on talking to the student before class and asking him to come by my office
so we could discuss it at length.

He was not in class. (It meets on MWF.) The next day he sent me another
e-mail. It was entitled "I guess you don't care." He told me that since I
had not bothered to respond to his e-mail that was proof that I was unconcerned.

I replied to him that I thought he would be in class, and I had planned on
inviting him to discuss this with me at a mutually agreed upon time.

He came to my office the next day about 30 minutes before class. He
apologized for the tone of his letter. He asked me if there was anyway he
could pass the course without coming to class the rest of the semester. He
explained to me that he was working 40 hours per week (essentially midnight
to eight) and was too sleeply to come to class. He also told me that he was
taking 15 hours at the beginning of the semester and he was only passing one
class.

I started discussing the following statement: Life is a series of
decisions, based on priorities, that lead to consequences.

After a long discussion, he thanked me for my concern and told me that he
was not going to quit his job, cut back on his hours, or look for another
job. I strongly urged him to take fewer courses each semester (like one,
since that seemed to be what he could pass). He told me that he had to take
more so he could graduate sooner.

He thanked me for my concern, shook my had, and walked out the door. he
explained to me that he wouldn't be coming to class any more since he knew
he couldn't pass.
