We have been using LiveMath since 1996 when it was Theorist. Theorist
became MathView which in turn became LiveMath. We chose LiveMath over
Mathematica and Maple V because the later two were command line driven
languages, while LiveMath has this elegant drag and drop interface that
requires no knowledge of a command language. This was important to us
because our College student population is essentially 100% ESL Pacific
Island minorities. Our students come in with math skills deficits, English
as their second or third language, and no prior contact with computers;
hence we needed a simple but powerful graphically oriented interface.
I still feel LiveMath trumps Mathematica and Maple in ease of use and
utility. LiveMath also allows the student to solve problems step-by-step.
LiveMath also has a slick plug-in that allows users to interact with
LiveMath notebooks across the Internet. The LiveMath notebooks tend to be
small as they are stored in ASCII.
