Dear Members,

I wanted to thank all of you who responded to my posting of July 15,
requesting information about Developmental Math courses. Since some of you
said that you would be interested in hearing what information I received, I
have tried to compile a short summary and thought I would share it with you.

My five questions and the answers I received are as follows:

1. Where do you teach?

I received answers from people who teach in Georgia, Idaho, Illinois,
Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio;, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and
Texas.

2. What is the name of your course?

Beginning Algebra
Intermediate Algebra
Learning Support Mathematics
Math/Pre-alg
Pre-alg/alg1
Alg1/alg2
Computer-Assisted Instruction in Pre-Agebra
Basic Mathematics
Intermediate Arithmetic
Introductory Algebra
Re-Entry Mathematics
Arithmetic Fundamentals
Algebra Fundamentals

3. How many class hours are required per week?

I got answers of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8 hours.

4. Are tutors provided for the students?

Everyone said yes.

5. Have you found a computer program that you feel is successful in teaching
the remedial math?

Most answers were No. One person said he was working on one. And one
had a strong recommendation for MATHmaker from Coastal Computer
(919-442-7436).

This was my first experience with joining a Discussion or Mailing List
and I was so pleased to get my first replies within a few hours of my
posting. The most fascinating responses I got had to do with teaching
Developmental Math over the Internet. I was really fascinated to hear how it
is actually done. If anyone else has tried it, please write and tell about
how it worked out for you and your students.

Now, in my summer class, I have just written my first HTML page. It
would be interesting to hear any advice about actually getting the page on
the Web.

Thanks,

Margaret Forte
