with Partial Credit) with (let's say Algebra)
quizzes.
You read my post correctly. The purpose of the
1,1,2 Partial Credit is to encourage high school
students (especially the slower, less motivated) to
follow specific procedures when solving Algebra. If
they don't, they quickly are lost.
Step 1: You Copy the Original Problem (1 point)
Step 2: You Show some work (1 point)
(only one "=" on each line)
Step 3: You calculate the answer (2 points)
Perhaps the 1,1,2 could be improved on, but students
seem to do the work more readily when they get points.
Many times, I've seen the problem copied and the
correct answer shown, but no evidence of the calculation is there; in
that case, the student gets no points at
all. "No Work, No Credit Points"
The student who simply copies each of the 25 problems,
gets 25/100 or 25%. I think that 25% is a fair score
to give a student--does anyone disagree with this? Giving that student
zero will pretty much cut off all
motivation he/she may have. Perhaps on the next quiz,
the student may try to show some work steps to get
more points.
The student who copies and shows some work (but
arrives at the wrong answer) gets perhaps 1 1/2 points;
if this is the case on each of the 25 problems, then
this student is given 1 1/2 x 25 or about 40%--does
anyone disagree with this? (40% is a fail, of course)
The student who gets 5 problems totally right and 1 1/2
points on the other 20 problems earns a Percentage
score of 20% + (1 1/2)% * 20 = 50%. Of the kids I
see, 45% - 60% represents a D.
Is this too generous?; that is, is 50% = D too high
of a grade to give a high schooler who neatly copies
each problem, shows some of the work steps on 20 of
the problems, and gets 5 problems totally correct?

1 point (partial credit) if a problem is copied down >>
Respectfully, Jim, did I read this correctly? A student can do NO math
work
and receive 25% of the credit? It doesn't take any brains to copy.
Please
explain your thoughts on this?
BTW, this has not been posted to the list.
