I believe partial credit can be used to help the student learn. I tell
all my classes I will award partial credit for their work. All work must
be included with the test. However when I grade the paper I mark every
problem which has an incorrect answer wrong. I will place a ? on any
answer that may be partially correct. The student must then argue their
case why their work is correct. e.g. I added 7 and 8 and forgot to carry
the 1. If I would have added correctly the area would have been----- or
such. Not only does this help the student analysis their work, it teaches
them to use the language of mathematics and to present an argument with
proof. On the flip side I must be ready to present an argument why
partial credit is denied. I was testing your ability to add correctly,
etc. I find about 2/3 of the students will present cases by the end of
the semester.
