> Another book that may be a good text/reference for liberal arts students is
> the text that accompanied the video series Annenberg/CPB Project "For All
> Practical Purposes".
We are using the "For All Practical Purposes" at Kaskaskia College for our
Liberal arts students. It seems to be a very good book. With the latest
edition, many of the support materials that were missing are available.
We have found that although the material looks very easy (to the
instructor) it is deeper than it looks. The counselors were placing
students with almost no math background into the course and they did not
do well. Most of the material in the text is not covered in any
traditional HS course, thus the "I've had this before" attitude of many
students is not there. We found (much to our amusement) that a couple of
the part-time teachers hired (beyond the control of the math department)
had great difficulty not only with teaching the material, but apparently
with the material itself. {It appears that the college hired 'math'
teachers whose only skill was HS algebra.}
