Hi Phil:
I think that I have seen this problem somewhere before but it is still a =
great problem and I do plan to use it in a few weeks when we do percent =
problems in elementary algebra.
Marilyn had always been one of my best sources for interesting problems =
in many branches of math from Algebra to Probability and Logic. =
Unfortunately she is no longer featured in my Sunday paper so please =
keep these problems coming through Cyber-space. Thanks again.
Mike

In this week's Marilyn Vos Savant is a good flurry of letters on this
problem.

Say that cucumbers are on sale, so you buy 100 pounds of them at your
local market. The cucumbers are 99% water. Some days later, they dry out
to 98% water. How much do they weigh now?

Sounds like a great problem for discussion groups in a math fundamentals
class. And a place where a little algebra might go a long weigh.
