I've given take home tests in developmental as well as college level
courses. Personally, I prefer they work together (I see that as an
advantage to the take home test) Most importantly, decide ahead of time
and make the rules clear to the student, otherwise some will, in effect,
be penalized by working alone. One of the reasons I prefer this type of
test is that it eliminates their "test anxiety". Also, I can ask more
thought provoking questions, since they have time to THINK.
