[MATHEDCC] Adjunct Math Faculty

Hi all,

Finally got the part-time survey form up. Hope it works.

There is a growing concern in this State about the increasing use of
part-time (adjunct) faculty to teach college courses. Will be meeting
with our State Faculty Senate this Thurs & Friday to begin a study of
this issue and to try to determine the effects, positive and negative,
that this use of adjunct faculty has on our students. (The issue of
explotation of adjunct faculty will be left to our negotiating
bodies).

To get some idea of the extent of this practice in math departments
around the country, I've put up a web page to gather data about the
numbers of adjunct faculty used on your campus, and to collect
comments about the problems associated with this use. Am particularly
interested in an estimate of the number of adjuncts that are used
mainly, or strictly, for cost saving purposes.

(Suggestions about the procedure, survey questions, form, next steps,
etc. will also be welcomed).
