Never did it before but have considered doing so on occasion. I would pick major points of egress and take sample counts at strategic times of day. The festival organizers should be able to identify their busiest and least busy times of day. Multiple counters at identical times may held you derive a mean count.
I will be curious to see how Mathematicians logic will differ with a non-Mathematicians logic.
