<Scott--
Although I have never worked in cubicle, many of my best friends
do and
I have thoroughly enjoyed your work with Dilbert.
And now the inevitable complaint!! I may be the first or way
down the line to offer this comment. With reference to the statement in
the
strip on December 24, 1997 that "It's not logically possible to prove
something can't be done" --That was funny, but I hope you know "That's
not true" Many examples spring to mind, from the simple one that it is
not possible in Euclidean Geometry to construct a triangle the sum of
whose angles are different than 180 degrees to the fact that it is not
possible to perfectly tune a piano (something about the difference
between rational and irrationial numbers--see
http://www.math.okstate.edu/~dunne/students/Temperament.html
BTW They lied about the "tiny bit of mathematics" needed to read this
site!!!)
I laughed when I first read this strip. But then I got to thinking
about what it actually said, and thought I would write to you. There
are a lot of illogical people in those cubicles, but usually you poke
fun of them with accurate complaints--those are better zingers!!
By now you've probably figured out that I'm a math teacher. Given the
current struggle we are having with trying to repair our public image
and also become more relevant to the real world, I really appreciate it
when cartoonists are accurate to the world of mathematics and funny at
the same time. Keep up the good work.>
Comments, fellow teachers?
