At our school there is no official policy how departments assign schedules.
It is at the chair's disgression, however precedence has been set in most
departments. When I started here 14 years ago, two of us were hired at the
same time to replace two retirees. One of the instructors that retired had
always taught Calc I and Calc II and the other had always taught Calc III
and Differential Equations. We decided that a rotation would be healthy.
Now that we have 4 full time faculty members in math, we get together at the
same time and do a round-robin pick of classes, but try to rotate the upper
level courses. In the English department, however, the teacher with the
most senority picks their schedule, then the second, and so forth until the
last person on the totem pole finally chooses from what is left over--and
generally gets a bad schedule. Although my senority is up there compared to
the other 3 (since the person hired with me is now gone) I think the
round-robin system is fair and helps make new people feel welcome and a part
of the department.
