When I started at LA Pierce College, the math chair would decide the
schedule based on short preference forms filled out by the faculty. It was
clear that effort was made for all of us to get at least some of what we
wanted.
However, filling out the schedule for 16 full-time (and 40-50 part time)
instructors was a lot of work. We switched to a system in which the chair
simply provides a template of the classes to be offered (including rooms and
times), and the full-time instructors take turns picking one class at a time
until their assignments are filled. The order is determined by lottery (a
new list each schedule), and we go through #1 - 16 for the first choice,
then #16 - 1 for the second choice, then #1 - 16 ...
After we all have our schedules, we sometimes barter with each other for
switches--this is usually accomplished before we leave the room, and the
selection of classes seems to take a half an hour. We've only been doing
this for two years, but the department seems to be satisfied with the
process and it makes the chair's life a LOT easier.
