Cynthia and others:
I have only been at Portland CC for 3 years, but when I came here I had my
first quarter of classes assigned before I arrived, but after that, the
dept. Chair asked what I would like to teach and pretty much arranged it.
After one year here, I became the chair and decided that I would make a
schedule of classes which made sense and then meet with the full-time
faculty to pick the classes. We get together before every quarter with the
schedule and everyone says what classes they want and if 2 people want the
same class we look for reasonable options. So far there has not been a
problem and everyone has been very willing to look at what they want and
what others want and to accommodate each other.
I do schedule some classes prior to our meeting. If a person has begun a
sequence, they are automatically scheduled to continue the sequence unless
they request not to continue. I think it is important for the students to
have the option to take the same instructor for their next class in a
sequence. The longest sequence we have is a 4 quarter calculus sequence.
At our campus we have 2 sequences beginning each quarter, so there are 8
calculus sequences going all the time. Everyone here who wants to teach
calculus can and some of us end up with more than one sequence going at a
time.
After the full-time instructors have picked their classes, I then have the
part-time instructors look at what is left. I begin with the part-time
instructors who have been the most loyal to the dept. by always being
willing to teach whatever we have at whatever time it is offered and let
them choose one or two classes-depending on how many they want to teach for
the quarter-and work my way through all the part-time instructors. I then
come back to the loyal part-time instructors if there are any classes left
and let them have an additional class if they wish. Again, if necessary, I
negotiate with the part-time instructors if there are conflicts in the
desires or the times an instructor is available. There have not been any
situations where it was not easy to resolve the issues.
Currently we have 7 full-time and 20 part-time instructors at our campus.
Hope this helps.
