Hi All--
I'm the chair of the department at Montgomery College--Rockville Campus. We
have 28 full-time and 45 -55 part-time faculty, depending on semester.
As chair, I set the schedule in coordination with the dean and campus
scheduling office, but faculty assignments are made by a pair of FT faculty,
using preference requests turned in by each faculty member. Generally
people get 75% exactly what they want, and 25% something mildly unwanted
(either in terms of time or course selection), but I think overall it works
well. We rotate upper level courses among qualified instructors, and expect
all faculty to take turns in the developmental sequence as well, or to fill
some other need such as teaching at night or off-campus.
After the FT schedules are done, a PT faculty coordinator assigns the PT
schedules, again based on preference forms they have completed and
submitted.
Generally, PT faculty with excellent evaluations and track record may get
more courses or slight preference in times, but most people are at least
satisfied.

I cannot imagine using a seniority system, although I know that is the
system even in other departments on our campus. I think it is not good for
the students or the faculty for many reasons.

Hello everyone,

I was wondering how you deal with seniority in your departments. I
recall talking with faculty at other colleges that have different
strategies for selecting classes.

At our college, Community College of Southern Nevada, it is strictly
seniority based. So, the people at the bottom of list tend to get
whatever they can take, which can be pretty ugly. Any suggestions?
Thank you,
Cynthia
