If we want to certify elementary teachers in two (or more) areas, why
not have "team teaching" in the 1st and 2nd grade as well. Most schools
have at least one aide in the primary grades. At class change time, the
aide enters one classroom so that the teacher can move to the next
class, allowing that teacher to progress to the next class, etc. until
the "last" teacher replaces the aide. The process could take a few
minutes, but changing gears always does. Instead of the students
changing rooms, move the teachers. Youngsters can handle a "small"
number of disruptions during the day.
That's my $.02.
