Thank you Barbara! It is easy to blame students lack of mathematical
knowledge on elementary or high school teachers. The fact is they are just
like us, doing the best job they can day by day. If you want to change the
world you have to begin with yourself. What can I do to improve my teaching?
We begin by improving the way we teach the prospective elementary teacher.
After all, we tend to teach as we were taught. Guess we need to set some
good examples and quit passing the buck. The majority of the elementary
teachers I know do a very good job. The majority of community college
teachers do a good job but I would hate to be put down because one of you had
a child enrolled is a class taught by a "lousy" community college instructor.
I guess maybe one rotten apple must spoil the barrel!
