Since the question is raised about the CAS graphing calculator, I have
several thoughts in this connection. (I*ll be brief) How do we know what
topics are important? Is it important for me to teach that 1 =
=20
+ 2x + 3 =3D 1 ? =
=09
3x + 1 =
3x2
- 5x - 2 x - 2
What about topics such as Descartes Rule of Signs, or the integral of (1 =
+
tan x)? (my TI-92 couldn*t seem to do it). There are too many to
enumerate here, but I*m having trouble discerning what*s important. If =
we
find a genius who has not mastered some mathematical theory, and place him
(or her) in front of a super computer, what good is it? I*ve used a lot =
of
technology. But by and large its been intermittent and mostly just for
*show*. I am basically teaching like I always have for 32 years.
