Here's an excerpt from a newsgroup post from a student's
perspective:

I remember at Princeton, student assessments of teacher
performance were collated by computer and made available as
printouts to students. I could go look up any teacher on
campus and read over ratings on all kinds of aspects, and weigh
how important these might be (sometimes I'd consider my
classmates unable to trully appreciate a specific teacher, who
might have a reputation as "arrogant" or "tough" -- but turned
out to be singularly excellent in my book, i.e. student tastes
and needs vary, so being super popular was really not essential
to your survival as a faculty member at Princeton -- the school
supported faculty for other reasons besides getting high marks
from undergraduates).
