Try this experiment and it will help you decide:

Give the students a sheet of graph paper and some data to plot (Olympic
records are good because there are some missing years and because starting
at zero is not a good strategy). This task will reveal what they know about
graphing (I was shocked) and will tell you how much time to spend before
picking up the calculator.
