At Suffolk County Community College, developmental math courses have two
grading systems -- one for each course.

For the Fundamental Math Skills course, the grade system is S/R/U/W
(satisfactory/ repeat/ unsatisfactory/ withdraw). The Algebra I course grade
system is SA/SB/SC/R/U/W, where SA, SB, and SC indicate the level of mastery
for the student's information and advisement purposes. The R grade is strictly
defined as being an average which is no more than 10 points below a satisfactory
grade (showing progress). U indicates unsatisfactory progress (perhaps due to
lack of attendance) and W indicates that the student withdrew in a timely manner.

The SA/SB/SC seems to work fairly well as the student can see how he or she
would have performed IF the course carried college credit.
