[MATHEDCC] Serious response to calc in classroom

Great article from Nancy. Here is my 2 cents worth.

Godd teachers can teach elementary school math with or without calculators.
When a good teacher uses a calculator to teach elementary school math, it
enhances the course.

Bad teachers cannot teach math with or without calculators. When a bad
teacher uses a calculator to teach elementary school math it makes a bad
course even worse.

Disclaimer: I use graphing calculators in all classes at Freshmen Algebra
and higher. I am convinced that my students understand mathematical
concepts better as a result. However, I have seen too many kids walk into
my classroom totally clueless about basic concepts, but convinced they don't
need to know them because all they have to do is punch the right buttons (or
run the right program that somebody gave them) to get the right answer.
